Offensive Coordinator Change in Cleveland??

Even though Eric Mangini remains HC going into 2010, you have to wonder if Holgrem will allow him to keep all of his coaching staff.

The first change to come to mind would be that of OC Brian Daboll.

I personally think Daboll deserves another chance to show what he can do. His utilization of Harrison towards the end of the season was nothing short of amazing. Imagine what he could have done if he had an accurate QB, WR's who knew how to run their routes, and a stable TE.

That of course is pure speculation........

Now that we know offensive minded Mike Holgrem wants to run a West Coast style Offense, or a variant thereof, one has to wonder if Daboll will retain his job.

Especially since Jim Zorn is jobless at the moment, and with the rising rumor of Matt Hasselbeck being released from Seattle.

It sounds almost too good to be true.

While working as QB's Coach in Seattle, Jim Zorn worked under Holgrem and Offensive Coordinator Gil Haskell in implementing the team’s offense while also furthering the development of QB Matt Hasselbeck.

In 2003, Zorn tutored Hasselbeck who set a franchise record with 3,841 passing yards. Hasselbeck has since become the franchise’s most-efficient passer (85.1 rating) while joining Zorn as the only Seahawks’ quarterback to pass for 3,000-plus yards in three consecutive seasons.

In 2007 under Zorn, Hasselbeck set Seattle single-season marks for attempts (562), completions (352) and yards (3,966). He also threw for a career-high 28 touchdowns en route to his third Pro Bowl selection.

Zorn left the Seahawks to become the Head Coach of the Washington Redskins in 2008, a position as of this week, he no longer holds.

And at the same time, rumors have been popping up about how Matt Hasselbeck might be released or traded before the 2010 season.

So....theoretically, we have a Pro Bowl WCO style QB, and the Coach who made him who he was in 2007, both possibly looking for jobs in the near future.

I wonder if Mike Holgrem is contemplating the same thing. If I was Mike, I'd have to sit down and seriously think this through.

On the other hand, Daboll is Manginis hand picked guy, and I gotta admit, his offense, (though bad in passing stats) was great on the ground at the end of the season.

This was Dabolls first stint as OC, and there is bound to be growing pains. Plus, the horrible performance of the Offense wasn't all on Daboll. He didn't have much to work with in the first place. But he did what he could, and worked nothing short of a miracle in the last 4 games of the season.

That's gotta count for something.

Holgrems got a lot of thinking to do, and I for one am glad I don't have to make the decision on this.

And what about the West Coast Offense?

I think running the WCO in Cleveland isn't a bad idea. As Holgrem mentioned before, the predecessor WCO was taught to Bill Walsh by our very own HC legend Paul Brown. Some might argue that the WCO wouldn't work in extreme cold and windy Cleveland weather, but I have to disagree.

I think Ken Anderson, Brett Farve and Matt Hasselbeck would agree with me. It worked for them, why shouldn't it work for us?

Now the big question is, will Mike Holgrem give Brian Daboll a chance to run a variant of the West Coast Offense, or will he get a guy who he knows can do it.

We'll just have to wait and see.

Exciting, isn't it!

Go Browns!!!!
